At East Ferry, we see lunchtime as an important part of children’s education. It is a time for pupils to enjoy healthy food, build friendships, develop independence and experience a strong sense of belonging within our school community. We aim to create a calm, inclusive and enjoyable environment where every child feels safe, valued and supported.

School meals

Our meals are provided by the Tower Hamlets Catering Team and offer a balanced, nutritious menu each day to support children’s health, wellbeing and learning.

Meals include:

  • Healthy and varied options
  • Vegetarian choices
  • Fresh salad and fruit
  • Culturally inclusive menus
  • Halal meat

We encourage children to make healthy choices, try new foods and develop positive attitudes towards healthy eating.

Dining hall experience

Children eat together in a calm and sociable environment where they can enjoy time with friends and develop positive lunchtime routines.

We place importance on helping children to:

  • Show kindness and respect
  • Develop good manners
  • Make healthy choices
  • Grow in independence and responsibility

Through this, children build confidence and strengthen their social and personal skills.

Lunchtime leadership

Older pupils may take on additional responsibilities through our Lunchtime Leader programme. This gives children the opportunity to support younger pupils, model positive behaviour and contribute to the smooth running of the dining hall. These roles help to develop leadership, responsibility and a sense of pride in contributing to the school community.

Allergies and dietary needs

The safety and wellbeing of all pupils is a priority. We work closely with families to support children with allergies, medical needs and dietary requirements.

East Ferry is a nut-free school. To keep our community safe, products containing nuts must not be included in packed lunches or snacks.

Packed lunches

Families who provide packed lunches are encouraged to support our healthy eating approach by offering balanced and nutritious options.

We ask that packed lunches:

  • Include healthy food choices
  • Avoid sweets and fizzy drinks
  • Remain nut-free

Healthy eating supports children’s concentration, wellbeing and readiness to learn throughout the school day.

Free school meals and Pupil Premium

All children attending East Ferry are currently entitled to a free school meal.

We encourage families who may be eligible for Pupil Premium to apply, as this provides additional funding that supports children’s learning, wellbeing and wider opportunities.

Please contact the school office for further information about eligibility and how to apply.
