Trips and outings

We believe that some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom, and we are committed to ensuring that every child benefits from a rich and carefully planned programme of trips, visits, workshops and residential experiences throughout their time at school.

Our enrichment offer is designed to deepen learning, build cultural capital, broaden horizons and inspire curiosity and ambition. Each experience is thoughtfully planned to connect directly with classroom learning, helping children make meaningful links between subjects and the wider world.

Learning beyond the classroom

Across their journey at East Ferry, pupils experience a wide range of carefully selected visits and experiences, including:

• Historical landmarks such as the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the Globe Theatre
• Major museums and cultural institutions including the Science Museum, British Museum, Museum of London Docklands and Imperial War Museum
• Arts and performance venues including the National Gallery, Barbican Centre and West End theatres
• Outdoor and environmental settings such as Mudchute Farm, Kew Gardens, London Zoo and coastal locations

These experiences are designed not as standalone events, but as an integral part of the curriculum, reinforcing and extending learning in a purposeful way.

Curriculum-linked experiences

Educational visits are carefully sequenced to support learning across all subject areas.

Pupils take part in workshops, fieldwork and practical experiences in history, science, geography, art, computing and religious education. They also engage in experiences that develop their understanding of citizenship and democracy, including visits to the Houses of Parliament, workshops on how laws are made and opportunities to engage with local issues through community projects.

These experiences help pupils connect classroom learning with real-world contexts, deepening understanding and strengthening long-term knowledge retention.

Rooted in the Isle of Dogs

Our location is a significant strength of our curriculum.

We make purposeful use of the Isle of Dogs and surrounding areas to help children develop a strong sense of place and belonging. Through local walks, fieldwork and carefully planned visits, pupils explore the area’s rich maritime history, the development of the docks and the transformation of London’s docklands over time.

Children study the River Thames as a key geographical feature, exploring its role in trade, transport, settlement and environmental change. They also consider the contrast between the historic character of the Isle of Dogs and the modern development of Canary Wharf, helping them understand how places evolve and change.

These experiences help pupils develop a deep connection to their local area while also understanding its place within the wider world.
