Year 2 is a key stage in children’s learning journey, where pupils build on the foundations developed in Year 1 and continue to grow as confident, independent and resilient learners.
As the final year of Key Stage 1, children consolidate essential knowledge and skills while preparing for the transition into Key Stage 2.
Throughout the year, pupils are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, develop independence and approach new challenges with confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

Reading
Reading is a central priority in Year 2 and underpins success across the wider curriculum.
Children continue to build on their phonics knowledge, developing increasing fluency, comprehension and confidence as readers. Through daily reading opportunities, guided sessions and high-quality texts, pupils expand their vocabulary, deepen understanding and develop a love of reading.
Alongside this, children take part in whole-class reading and structured discussion, supporting their ability to infer, explain and respond to texts thoughtfully.
We encourage participation in our reading challenge, where children are supported to read regularly and celebrate their achievements throughout the year.
Home learning
Children are supported to develop positive learning habits at home and take pride in their progress.

Sleepover Experience
One of the most memorable experiences in Year 2 is the annual school sleepover.
This carefully planned experience provides pupils with the opportunity to develop independence, resilience and confidence in a familiar and supportive environment.
Children take part in team-building activities, games and shared experiences that strengthen friendships and support personal development. For many pupils, the sleepover is a significant milestone and a lasting memory of their time in Key Stage 1.
End of Key Stage 1
Throughout Year 2, teachers assess children’s learning carefully and continuously across the curriculum.
At the end of Key Stage 1, teacher assessment is informed by a broad range of evidence from children’s work and progress over time. Some children may also complete statutory assessment activities in reading, mathematics and grammar.
Our priority is ensuring that every child feels confident, supported and successful, and that they are well prepared for the transition into Key Stage 2.
